Hoollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary – Home of India’s Only Gibbons
Hoollongapar Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the most unique wildlife areas in Assam. It is the only protected forest in India where visitors can see Hoolock Gibbons living in their natural habitat. The sanctuary is about one hundred kilometres from Kaziranga and is ideal for a half day visit.
The forest is dense and mainly covered with hollong trees. Sunlight reaches the ground in patches, creating a quiet and green environment. The sanctuary is explored on foot with an authorised guide. Early morning is the best time when gibbons move actively on the tree tops.
Apart from gibbons, this forest holds other animals such as stump tailed macaques, capped langurs, Assamese macaques, and a good number of birds. The soft forest floor, leaf cover, and tall trees give a very different experience compared to the open grasslands of Kaziranga.
Highlights of the Sanctuary
- Natural Habitat of Hoolock Gibbons : Visitors often see them swinging between trees, calling loudly, or feeding on fruits.
- Guided Walk Experience: Exploring on foot helps in spotting gibbons, macaques, butterflies, and birds at close range.
- Thick Evergreen Forest: Hollong trees dominate the area, and the environment stays cool and shaded.
- Birdwatching Opportunity: Hornbills, barbets, and several forest birds are regularly sighted.

Best Time to Visit
Winter (December to February)
Cool weather, clear trails, and high activity of gibbons in the morning. Ideal time for walking tours and photography.
Summer (March to June)
Hot afternoons but mornings stay pleasant. Gibbons remain active, though visitors should carry water and sun protection.
Monsoon (July to September)
Heavy rain makes trails slippery and access limited. Gibbon sightings continue, but movement inside the forest becomes difficult. Not recommended for most visitors.
